Het Plafond

A painting above the rest

ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE

Statistics, found online, so not necessarily verified, say that on average, time spent in front of a work of art is 3 seconds.

The willingness to put a work of art on a ceiling could be purely ornamental but could be an invitation to take the time to appreciate, invite contemplation. Staying upright under this painted ceiling forces almost forces you to lie down like what one would do to look at the stars. It also forces the artist to project his work into a different dimension, traditionally vertically in front of them, changing it here to a horizontal and aerial view. I remember having accepted the invitation of the owners of this unique exhibit space called Het Ceiling in Rotterdam, for the challenge but also a bit out of mockery I will admit, that a painter isn’t one until he has painted a ceiling.
